Honestly a lot of theater goers don’t exactly understand the stage directions and this helps a lot. On stage the stage directions are your left and right. From the Audience the stage direction Left is the audience members Right and vice versa. Up stage and Down stage is very interesting. Back in the early days of theater all the stages are “raked,” like in CATS. A “raked” stage is a stage where it is on a slant. The back of the stage is higher than the front. Soooo the back part of the stage is “Up” because you would have to literally walk up and the same for “Down” because you had to walk down.
